Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe, as can be seen in the archaeological ruins in the city centre. Plovdiv’s Roman past can also be seen in the hilltop amphitheatre, still used for cultural events today. The city’s main attraction is its Old Town, with mid-19th century mansions colourfully preserved, which today serve as house museums and galleries.
Plovdiv is also the European Capital of Culture for 2019 and it is located only 140 km away from Sofia.
